What’s the difference between Platinum and Gold wedding bands?

Both platinum and gold are among the most precious of metals. Although platinum is the most precious because of its rarity and durability, gold is still the most traditional because of it’s cost effectiveness and availability in both white and gold.

Durability

Platinum is 60% heavier than gold and is denser and stronger, making it more resistant to damage. Neither gold nor platinum will tarnish, although platinum will retain its luster longer.

Display

Platinum only comes in a silver color, while gold can be yellow or white. Although a silver-toned metal is the more popular trend, couples may want to choose gold if they desire a yellow metal.

Cost

Because of its rarity, platinum is more expensive than gold and costs about 20% more. Because it is similar in color, 18k gold is a good alternative if platinum it out of your budget.

Malleability

Gold is measured on a karat scale, ranging from 14k to 24k. Pure gold is 24k, and is not a good option for a ring as it is too soft and will bend with daily wear. The most popular is 18k gold, which is more durable than pure gold because of the various alloys that are used to strengthen it. In comparison, platinum is so strong that it is difficult to size because of the high temperature required to change the metal’s shape.
Whether you choose platinum or gold, you can be assured that they will both make quality settings for your engagement ring as well as your wedding bands.

What’s the difference between 14K Gold and 18K Gold?

18 karat = 75.0% gold

14 karat = 58.3% gold

Pure gold is too soft to withstand the stresses of every-day wear, so it is alloyed with a mixture of metals like silver, copper, nickel, and zinc to give it strength and durability. Karatage, noted by a number followed by "k" indicates purity, or how much of the metal in a piece of jewelry is gold. Karatage is expressed in 24ths, making 24k gold 100% gold

Is Yellow Gold another type of Gold?

Yellow Gold is alloyed with silver, while White Gold is alloyed with nickel.  It is that simple.

So if someone ever tells you 14k White Gold and 14k Yellow Gold are different, they are correct to a point.  They are different only in visual color and whether one of the additional metals alloyed with the Gold was silver or nickel.  They are not different as to their 58.3% pure Gold content and they are not different as to their percentages of alloyed copper and zinc.

Short answer is:

Are Yellow Gold and White Gold different metals?  NO!!

Are Yellow Gold and White Gold different Gold alloys?   YES!!

Even though it is called ‘White Gold’, the alloyed metal has a slight yellowish tint.    A jewelry item made of White Gold is often electroplated with a thin coating of Rhodium, which is a member of the Platinum family metals (to make it more white from its yellow).

There really is no distinct advantage in using White Gold versus Yellow Gold; it is a matter of personal  'metal' visual preference

How do I maintain Platinum ring?

Follow these simple instructions to maintain your platinum ring’s finish:

  • Store pieces separately in a jewelry box or chamois bag so they don't get scratched by other items of jewelry.
  • Remove your platinum ring when doing manual work.
  • Don't handle bleach or harsh chemicals when wearing your platinum ring. Although they won't hurt the platinum, chemicals may discolor some of the softer gemstones.
  • Clean your platinum ring periodically in the same way you clean other fine jewelry - using a pre-packaged jewelry cleaner or by soaking it in a mild solution of soap and warm water then gently rubbing it with a soft cloth.
  • Have your platinum ring professionally cleaned once in a while.
  • If looked after properly your platinum ring should not need to be repaired. For resizing. polishing and cleaning look for a qualified jeweler with a platinum trained bench worker.

How do I maintain Gold ring?

If treated carefully, the gold jewelry item you have purchased could last a lifetime and might even be handed down to future generations. So here are some tips that will help preserve the beauty of your gold jewelry.

First of all, gold is lasting and durable but can get scratched or dented if treated roughly. This is particularly true of items worn on the hands like rings and bracelets that are prone to a lot of knocks. So remove these pieces before any type of strenuous activity.

Second, beware of chemicals. Gold’s worst enemy is chlorine. Repeated exposure can weaken gold’s structure, eventually leading to breakage. So keep your gold jewelry away from chlorinated cleaning products and out of swimming pools and jacuzzis.

On a related note, acids, abrasives and other harsh chemicals found in some common household cleaning solutions can weaken your jewelry or damage its finish. So it’s best to cover up rings and bracelets with rubber gloves while doing heavy-duty cleaning. Or better yet, take them off altogether.

Gold can lose its luster over time if repeatedly exposed to dust, moisture, perspiration and makeup. So make sure to clean your jewelry regularly. You can use a cleaning solution of sudsy, lukewarm water, or bring it to your local jeweler and have it professionally steam-cleaned. After cleaning and rinsing, always dry and polish jewelry with a chamois or soft cloth to avoid scratches and bring out its shine.

Proper storage is as important as cleaning. Protect your gold jewelry by storing it safely in a jewelry box or keeping it wrapped in a soft cloth when not being worn. Furthermore, keeping pieces stored separately will prevent them from getting tangled or scratching one another.

Finally, always inspect your gold jewelry for weakness or damage and bring it to a professional jeweler you trust for immediate repair. Pay particular attention to clasps (to ensure they catch easily but are still secure); prongs (to ensure they haven’t cracked, bent or loosened, which could cause the stone to fall out); bracelet and neck chain links (to ensure they don’t kink or bend); pin backs and earring posts (to see if they are bent or loose); and wedding bands, pendants and charms (dangling pieces and items worn every day for a long period of time) are subject to wear and can thin out and eventually break. We will be able to handle these and many other repair jobs and ultimately restore your gold jewelry for you.

What’s a Comfort Fit?

Comfort fit, or internally round, bands are definitely more comfortable for people who have to frequently remove their rings, and for people who are not used to wearing rings, so they are especially popular among men. Because comfort fit rings are thicker from inside to out, they have more metal content than standard rings and may be much more expensive.

Are there different types of Platinum?

Platinum jewellery is rarely manufactured from 100 per cent platinum because the pure metal is too soft to withstand the rigors of daily wear. Most is typically produced using platinum of 85 to 95 per cent purity, alloyed with small amounts of other metals to increase its hardness. The platinum purity or “fineness” is nearly always measured in parts per thousand (ppt). A hallmark showing “Pt950” certifies that the metal is composed of 950 ppt (95 per cent) platinum and 50 ppt (5 per cent) other metals. DiamondsRMine is usually using PT950.
